The Space Bat

By Romana Annette  03/26/2009

Dedicated to the injured bat seen on the

Space Shuttle on March 17, 2009

Now little voyager sailing upwards

On a grand trip Whitman never envisioned

With no script and no score whatsoever

But still an epic and adventurous space opera.

No mere speck on a space shuttle tank

But a valiant free-tailed Chiroptera after all

Though badly crippled and sure to die

Carrying the banner of all bat-kind into space.

Like a little winged mouse out of hell, but

Much faster than a streamlined supersonic jet

With no choice but to go up into the sky

Better than falling to the cruel, cold ground below.

Cheers rang out from Mission Control

As you were bound for ultimate glory

Taking your deserved place in furry history

Hurray for the space bat, voyager to the stars.
